Reasonable adjustments

We want you to be free to do your best at every stage of your application.

Two women sit at an office table. They are talking to a male colleague via video call.

We’re committed to making sure that everyone who applies to work at the House of Commons can participate equally and fully in our process. We approach this by working with candidates to understand their needs, and remove any barriers to ensure the best possible experience.

What are reasonable adjustments?

Different disabilities, and mental or physical health conditions can mean that more traditional recruitments systems and processes could become a barrier. For example, you might need your application form in a different format. Or you could benefit from additional information to prepare for your interview. Whatever your personal requirements, know that we’re ready to put adjustments in place to support you.

Here are some examples of the kinds of support we can offer:

  • Allowing additional time in timed tests, interviews or other assessment activities
  • Providing your application form in a different format
  • Changing the time, location or format of your interview
  • Providing your interview questions in written format
  • Providing your interview questions in advance of the interview
  • Providing a sign language interpreter
  • Providing a supported test session
  • Providing advice about assistive technology.

This is not an exhaustive list, and we will consider any reasonable adjustments you might need.

How do I request reasonable adjustments?

Any request you make is always confidential, and there are several ways you can do this. Firstly, you can tick the reasonable adjustments box on the application form during the initial stage of the recruitment process.Someone on our team will follow up and speak to you confidentially about your needs.

Alternatively, you can contact us at any time to discuss what support we can offer by emailing recruitment@parliament.uk.

Examples of reasonable adjustments

Example A

A candidate with a neurodivergent condition was asked to complete a test as part of the assessment and selection process. The candidate requested additional time to complete the test. We provided the additional time for the candidate to complete the test, and ensured they were not at a disadvantage during this stage of the process.

Example B

A candidate with a hearing impairment was invited to interview with the House of Commons. Prior to the interview, they requested that a British Sign Language Interpreter was present. We provided a BSL interpreter who was present and assisted where necessary during the interview.

Example C

A candidate with a neurodivergent condition requested to see the interview questions prior to the interview. We provided the questions prior to the interview and provided the questions in a written format during the interview.

Example D

A candidate with accessibility issues who was invited to interview requested assistance on the day. We changed the location of the interview, and provided support to the candidate to ensure they had a smooth experience when physically attending the interview.
