Benefits and support

Inside and outside work, life is different for everyone. And over time, things can change. Whether you’re just starting out or planning your next steps, here’s what we offer to help you feel valued, rewarded and supported at every stage.

Generous annual leave

Everyone needs quality time away from work. During your first year, you’ll receive 30 days of annual leave, increasing to 35 days per year thereafter. You’ll also have bank holidays off (pro rata for anyone working part time), and you can apply to buy or sell up to five days' leave per year.

Excellent pension

Your future is important to us. From the day you join the House of Commons, you'll be eligible for our renowned pension, which is part of the Principal Civil Service Pension Scheme (PCSPS).

Helpful loans

There are times when we all need a bit more support. Working for Parliament means you can apply for a loan towards the tenancy deposit for your rental home or your travel into work. The financial support we offer includes:

  • Season ticket loan
  • Bicycle loan
  • Rental deposit loan

Useful Cycle to Work scheme

If you want to get fit and save money, we’ve got it covered. Thanks to this government-supported initiative, you can spread out the cost of buying a new bike, as well as save on Income Tax and National Insurance.

Affordable gym membership

We love finding new ways to keep you in peak condition. We offer a subsidised gym on the Parliamentary estate, where you can choose full membership or to pay as you go. This will also give you access to a network of over 100 leisure centres across the UK.

Delicious onsite catering

Working here means you’ll enjoy access to our onsite cafes, bars and restaurants. And you’ll find there’s plenty of choice on the estate, catering for all kinds of preferences and budgets, and in a range of traditional and contemporary surroundings.

Fantastic flexibility

We’re here to make Parliament happen. And some roles can only be carried out in person, on the Parliamentary estate. But wherever possible, we offer hybrid working. This gives you the option of working remotely and onsite. We also offer compressed hours, so you’ll have plenty of flexibility to find the balance that works for you.

Ongoing career development and support

We want to help take your career in any direction. Everyone who works here has access to a fantastic range of learning tools and development opportunities. From workshops to online resources, career coaching, time off for study leave and sponsored qualifications.

Supporting health and wellbeing

Your wellbeing is really important to us. Our in-house Parliamentary Health and Wellbeing Service is here to provide the advice and guidance that supports your health at work.

Some of the options available include:

  • referrals to Occupational Health Therapists
  • referrals to mental health and wellbeing support
  • clinical nurse drop-in clinic for ill health and minor treatment
  • onsite GP available to all (whether you’re based in the office or working remotely)
  • annual flu vaccination clinic available to all
  • health and wellbeing annual programme of events
  • onsite support from our Parliamentary Mental Health First Aider network.

Helpful workplace adjustments

We’re always ready to offer a range of reasonable adjustments, including:

  • assistive technology such as software or hardware
  • speech recognition software or large computer screens
  • ergonomics such as chairs and standing desk

Friendly onsite nursery

Sometimes, you just need a helping hand. The House of Commons Nursery is a modern, welcoming facility with capacity for 40 children, aged from three months to five years.

Caring for carers

We look after the people who support others. As part of this, we provide the parents and carers in our workforce with a variety of leave options, including:

  • maternity, paternity, shared parental and adoption
  • caring leave
  • special leave

Special leave for veterans

We take extra steps to support our community of veterans. If you’re a member of the auxiliary or reserve forces, you may be granted special leave (typically unpaid). When you receive a call-up notice to attend training courses or camps, this leave will be granted for the period of your absence.
