Following a career move from the retail industry, I started my career at the House of Commons in the Accounts Receivable team, back in 2018. I was working as an Accounts Officer, and I realised that I really enjoyed the work I was doing, and I wanted to learn more.

I did a blended-learning Accountancy Taxation Professional Level 7 (Standard) Apprenticeship. This meant I studied the ACCA Accountancy Qualification, and became an Assistant Finance Business Partner. The professional qualification allowed me to move up the career ladder, as it provided all the key technical knowledge I needed. I learnt a lot of softer skills as well, and I enjoyed a good work-life balance.

Throughout my apprenticeship, I’ve moved roles to gain wider experience across the profession. This includes a stint as a Finance Business Partner, and a couple of years as Financial Planning and Analysis Manager, where I also had the opportunity to do some financial accounting.

I am currently a Financial Governance and Capability Manager within the Finance, Portfolio and Performance team. The role is brand new, following an Independent Review of Financial Management, and a target operating model change within the Finance function. Our team is driving improvements and cultural change in relation to financial management, across the whole organisation, which is something I am passionate about.

My apprenticeship has definitely opened up a lot of avenues and will possibly lead to a Managing Director or Finance Director role at a later stage – who knows. It has been a worthwhile and amazing experience that has taught me a lot. Not just technical knowledge, but about myself too.

It doesn’t matter what stage you are at in your career or life – an apprenticeship is a fantastic way to learn, and apply your knowledge to the real world at the same time. Make the most of the opportunities that come your way, especially those that take you out of your comfort zone.

Krishna is making Parliament happen, and so could you.
