Benefits

The House of Lords is a great place to work and our colleagues have access to some unique benefits and experiences. We recognise that salary is only one part of the package, and we have a wide range of other benefits too.

Access to the parliamentary estate, a UNESCO world heritage site

Most of our roles require regular travel to Westminster and you will be rewarded with one of the most exciting workplaces in the UK. Have a morning coffee on the House of Lords terrace, walk through Westminster Hall on your lunch break, maybe even take your friends and family on a personalised tour around the Palace of Westminster – it’s up to you!

An opportunity to be part of historical events

The Palace of Westminster is a national focal point, regularly hosting historical events such as the State Opening of Parliament, visits from international dignitaries and talks from notable figures within the chambers of the House of Commons and House of Lords. You’ll be able to apply for tickets to attend and be a part of history in the making!

A wide range of flexible working opportunities

Since the pandemic we have changed our approach to flexible working. We have colleagues who live across the UK, with a focus on balancing the needs of individuals, teams and the House. We want to attract capable people from a range of different backgrounds and while some roles will require full-time working in Westminster, we encourage flexible working wherever possible.

We support a wide range of flexible working opportunities, with colleagues working creative patterns to support a healthy work-life balance. As long as we are delivering excellent services to the House and its members, we are open to hybrid working, job shares, part time or compressed arrangements. We have an “inclusion passport” which is a tool used to support discussions between individuals and their line managers about the working arrangements.

Generous annual leave

We understand that you need time to recharge and focus on life outside of work. During your first year, you’ll receive 30 days of annual leave, increasing to 35 days after your first year of employment. You’ll also have bank holidays off (pro rata for anyone working part time), and we shut down for three days at Christmas.

The chance to be a part of the parliamentary community

You’ll reach every corner of the parliamentary community. From our award-winning catering team to colleagues responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of our historic site, you’ll work with people who spend their days researching and providing briefings for the major items of business for the House, and others who ensure that Parliament is kept safe and secure.

Learning and development

We empower our colleagues to prioritise their development and to build their skills and capability. We have a dedicated team that supports learning and career development, and provide access to in-house and external workshops, training events, coaching and mentoring and e-learning.

There are opportunities to study for professional qualifications relevant to your role supported by the House of Lords, including study leave to ensure you can fit your professional development around work and home.

Health and wellbeing

Our dedicated health and wellbeing team works across Parliament to ensure that our staff have access to the tools they need to stay fit and healthy. Their services include:

  • 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme, mental health and wellbeing support.
  • Parliamentary Occupational Health service and regular wellbeing events
  • Medical support via a clinical nurse and access to an onsite GP.
  • Annual flu vaccination clinic available to all staff.

Inclusive culture and workplace

We are committed to increasing diversity and maintaining an inclusive workplace culture for all our employees.  Our Inclusion and Diversity team support with reasonable adjustments and our Workplace Equality Networks can also provide support and a safe space for ideas to be discussed and issues to be raised.

We have an on-site workplace nursery and a multi-faith prayer room and chapel. We support our colleagues with a variety of generous leave options, including but not only for parents and carers.

In addition to the above, we also offer a range of other benefits, including;

  • Civil Service Pension Scheme.
  • Salary loans including bicycle purchase and season tickets.
  • Access to mylifestyle which provides discounts from a range of well-known brands and retailers
  • An on-site gym, hairdressers, post office, travel office, cash machines, cafés, bars and restaurants
