Portcullis House: Key dates

1988 - Space Audit
An audit of the whole Parliamentary estate revealed an urgent need for more working space.

1989 - Site Study Commissioned
The architects Michael Hopkins and Partners undertook a detailed study of the site.

1992 - Project Commissioned
The Portcullis House project was commissioned by Parliament.

1993 - Detailed Designs
Michael Hopkins and Partners published their first detailed designs for the building by this date.

1994 - Site Cleared
Existing Victorian buildings on the site were demolished.

1998 - Construction Began
Construction of the structure above ground began on 5 January.

2000 - Building Works Completed
Certificate of completion issued on 18 August; MPs began to occupy the building in September.

2001 - Offical Opening
Portcullis House was officially opened by the Queen on 27 February; the building won the timber structure award at the Timber Industry Awards and became the biggest draw at the London Open House event in September.
