Francis Carruthers Gould on Sir Benjamin Stone

Francis Carruthers Gould (1844-1925) was a political cartoonist and stockbroker.  He illustrated important events in the financial world and in 1887 he became a contributor to the Pall Mall Gazette.  Later, he transferred to the Westminster Gazette where his caricatures assumed a more political commentary.  In this period, Sir Benjamin Stone was also active in Westminster and their paths inevitably crossed during their daily pursuits.  Carruthers Gould noted in his autobiography that Stone was “a kindly old gentleman with a hobby for photography which he utilised with so much skill and discrimination that he has gathered together a collection which is of great national and historical interest and value”.  In 1906 Carruthers Gould was knighted.
