Resolution banning smoking in the House of Commons

This 1694 resolution prohibiting tobacco in the House of Commons was still being referred to in the 1960s. Smoking was clearly permitted elsewhere in the House as an account book survivies listing the quantity and type of Snuff supplied to the Commons between 1868-1904.  One of the stranger items in the Parliamentary Archives is a 19th century cigar case with cigar which belonged to Thomas M Hinds, uncle of Sir Rowland Whitehead MP.

It was resolved "That no Member of the House do presume to Take Tobacco in the Gallery of the House" and "That no Member of the House do presume to take Tobacco at the Table, sitting at Committees".
