Assassination

The assassination of Spencer Perceval at about 5.15 pm on 11th May 1812 took place in the lobby of the House of Commons. Perceval, who had been summoned to attend the House, was shot dead by John Bellingham as he entered the lobby.

Bellingham, who had hidden his pistol in a secret pocket of his greatcoat, calmly gave himself up and was subsequently taken to the bar of the House of Commons before being placed under arrest.
