Spencer Perceval (1762-1812) was British Prime Minister from 1809 until his death in 1812. After his election as MP for Northampton in 1796 Perceval experienced a rapid rise to power and was appointed Attorney-General on 14th April 1802.  The Attorney-General is the chief law officer of the crown who acts as the crown's representative in legal proceedings. Perceval remained in this role until he was asked by the Prime Minister, the Duke of Portland, to be Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1807.

This Writ of Summons relates to Perceval's appointment as Attorney-General which necessitated that Perceval stand for re-election for Northampton.
