Building the Chapel 1292-1363
St Stephen's Chapel was one of the great English building projects of the Middle Ages.
Although innovative and influential in its design, St Stephen's was built in fits and starts over seventy years. It was begun in 1292 under Edward I. Edward II then continued work when he had enough money and stopped work when funds ran short. Edward III worked on the chapel sporadically in the 1330s and steadily in the 1340s.
St Stephen's was finished architecturally by 1348, although it would not be fully decorated until 1363.
