The Politicians

Henry John Temple (1784-1865) was more famously known as Lord Palmerston. He had the distinction in his political career of serving under three parties, as a Tory in his early years as a Parliamentarian, then as a Whig and finally he would serve as the Prime Minister for the Liberals in 1859.

When a Reform Bill was introduced to Parliament in May 1864, Palmerston was not as committed to its principles as some of his party colleagues such as Gladstone. Shortly after winning another General Election in the summer of 1865 he unexpectedly passed away after a short illness.
