Barbara Frances Wootton, Baroness Wootton of Abinger (1897-1988)

Barbara Wootton was the first woman member of the House of Lords, created on 8 August 1958. She was also the first to chair proceedings, as Deputy Speaker.

An expert on sociology, criminology and penal reform, she wrote 15 books and was awarded 13 honorary degrees. She served on four Royal Commissions and was made a Companion of Honour in 1977.

During her time in the House she was a contributor to committees and debates, and is remembered for successfully sponsoring the Bill to abolish capital punishment in 1965.
