Ian Fraser, Baron Fraser of Lonsdale (1897-1974)

Lord Fraser of Lonsdale was the first peer to be created, by letters patent dated 1 August 1958. Blinded during active service in the First World War, he worked to promote welfare for blind people and ex-servicemen.

A founding member and national president of the Royal British Legion, he was also chairman of St Dunstan's centre for blinded servicemen, and served for thirty years on the council of the Royal National Institute for the Blind.

Formerly a Conservative MP, he was appointed CBE in 1922, knighted in 1934 and appointed CH in 1953.
