Sir Edward Arthur Alexander Shackleton, Lord Shackleton of Burley (1911-1994)

Son of the famous Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton, Edward Shackleton was himself an explorer and geographer. He was a Labour MP from 1946 to 1955.

As a life peer he held many positions, including Minister of Defence for the Royal Air Force, Lord Privy Seal, Paymaster-General, Leader of the House of Lords, Minister in charge of the Civil Service Department, Opposition Leader in the House of Lords, and Chairman of the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology.

He was also for many years a member of the Political Honours Scrutiny Committee.
