Why India is Heart and Soul with Great Britain

When Britain entered into war in 1914, so too did its Empire, including the British Raj. Almost 1.5million volunteered in the Indian Expeditionary Force and fought on the Western Front, in East Africa, Egypt, Gallipoli and Mesopotamia. India also contributed to the war effort through produce such as animals, supplies and financial aid, which is outlined in this article. However by the Second World War, India's willingness to aid Britain had dwindled. In 1942 the Indian National Congress announced a ‘Quit India' campaign demanding Independence in exchange for India's help in the fight against Nazi Germany. Britain initially resisted this call yet once the Labour Party took control in 1945, Atlee made Indian Independence one of his primary mandates.
