First House of Lords Journal

The first volume of the House of Lords Journal, open at 21 January 1510 (1509 old style). This volume was compiled during the first year of the reign of Henry VIII, and the Journal has continued to be produced as the official record of the business of the House ever since. The first journal was mainly compiled in Latin but English was increasingly used after the mid 16th century.

Page 1: The early Journals consist of daily entries of Bills read and business done. From 1514 they began to include lists of members present. On this page, Parliament is opened and the Lord Chancellor's speech is recorded in detail.
