Letter from Charles I

The Bill of attainder could still be blocked by the House of Lords, of which Strafford was a member, but the House was persuaded to pass the Bill as the threat of violence from the public was so great. All that remained was the signature of the King who was reluctant to give assent as he felt Strafford had served him with a great deal of loyalty.

This is a letter from King Charles I to the House of Lords in favour of mercy towards the Earl of Strafford. In the bottom right hand corner is Charles I's signature.
