Alexander Gordon-Lennox

Alexander Gordon-Lennox was Serjeant at Arms from 1962 until 1976. Like many individuals who have held the office of Serjeant at Arms, he came from a military background and had spent many years serving in the Royal Navy before his retirement in 1962. Gordon-Lennox was the first Serjeant at Arms to be selected by the House of Commons, who regained their right to do so after the office had traditionally been appointed by the monarch since the 16th century. In 1965 the Serjeant at Arms attended a new Select Committee on the House of Commons, appointed in order to better regulate the administration of accommodation and services in the House of Commons.
