Serjeant at Arms uniform sketches

This sketch depicts Colonel Henry Seymour (Serjeant at Arms 1812-1835) in full ceremonial uniform. To the right of the sketch are a list of Seymour's measurements, including his foot size and height. The current ceremonial uniform of the Serjeant at Arms remains relatively unchanged since its establishment in the late 18th century and includes a black wool suit, black patent shoes and a lace collar and cuffs. The uniform also includes a ceremonial sword and scabbard, which is worn during the Speaker's procession. The Serjeant at Arms is the only member of the House of Commons staff who is allowed to wear a sword in the Chamber.
