Daniel Goodwin: Financial Accountant

""

I started at the House of Commons as a Financial accountant, prior to that I spent 12 years in the Army and one year at a chartered accounts practice.

I recently finished AAT level 4 and wanted to maintain momentum, embarking on Accountancy Professional level 7 ACCA. The House was offering to pay and give me the time to complete a widely recognised accounting qualification, for me it was a no brainer!

What is your job role and what do you love most about it?

Financial Accountant, it’s a great role for learning. It is the centre of finance, everything during a financial year feeds into the annual accounts so you get to see so much of what makes the House tick.

How did you start your career in House of Commons?

I Started at the HOC as a Financial Accountant, prior to that I spent 12 years in the Army and one year at a chartered accounts practice in Rochester, Kent. I saw a role advertised online and thought it would be amazing to work in Parliament, I applied and luckily enough for me, I got the job!

What apprenticeship are you doing and why did you decide to do it?

Accountancy Professional Level 7 ACCA, I recently finished AAT level 4 and wanted to maintain momentum, push forward and continue studying while what I had learned was still fresh. I figured it would be a good idea to keep going while I was still in the routine of taking exams and finding time to study. As well as the above, the House was offering to pay and give me the time to complete a widely recognised accounting qualification, for me it was a no brainer!

Where do you see this apprenticeship getting you in the future?

Personal aspirations aside, I see this apprenticeship making me a better accounting professional overall. Which, in turn, will help me do my job and benefit the House as my employer. When I think about personal goals, I would hope the apprenticeship would enable me to pursue promotion and, in the end, a better salary.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

It is still fairly early in the apprenticeship for me, so it is too early to give advice. But I will say that, if an employer is willing to give you the opportunity to gain such a widely recognised qualification, all while working and getting paid, Why say no?

If you had to use one sentence to describe your apprenticeship so far what would it be?

I believe the apprenticeship is a good opportunity and if you are given then chance to embark on such a journey, take it!
