Chris Clarkson MP - Canada
Chris Clarkson MP
MP for Heywood and Middleton
My dad grew up above my grandfather’s shop opposite what is now the Sheppard-Yonge Subway Station in Toronto.
My grandad was actually born a British subject because the concept of being a Canadian citizen did not exist until 1947 – despite never visiting the UK until well into his middle age.
It wasn’t until I was born in 1982 that the UK passed the Canada Act, which finally gave the Canadian Parliament the power to amend Canada’s constitution.
The Commonwealth means a huge amount to me and I am very proud to have both British and Canadian heritage.
