I was born in Orpington, Kent and was three months old when a lovely couple from Malta chose me to be their son.
My adopted parents could not have children but fell in love with me when they visited an orphanage near where my father was based as a mechanical engineer in the RAF.
Growing up in Malta, I had the most wonderful parents who told me often that I was their ‘bundle of joy’.
As a gay man - and knowing that the UK was more cosmopolitan than Malta - I moved here in 1985 and worked as a catering steward on the railways before coming to in Parliament in 2010.
To me, the Commonwealth provides a bridge between the land of my birth and the country and people that took me into their hearts.
