Sikhs live according to a code of honour in service of all humanity. Sikh ethics advocate equality for men and women of every race and religion. For me I’m very fortunate to have been brought up in a traditional Sikh family. Having lived through some tough periods in my life I have always turned to my faith for comfort and guidance.
I was fortunate enough to have participated in many projects through my local Gurdwara (Temple) over the last few years. One that is very close to my heart is a project back in 2015 that included going to the French border to deliver much needed supplies to a refugee and migrant encampment in the vicinity of Calais. We had a team of over 50 people who had various duties from buying thermal clothing, arranging transport to making food supplies all night long. I was part of a team who went to Calais to provide those who were desperately in need. Whilst it was heart breaking to see so many people in need, I was inspired by their attitude and strong mind set in such a hostile environment.
This experience and practicing my faith have taught me a lot about how the mind is such an amazing and powerful tool.
Experiences like this have really helped me in my Job today as it’s made more aware of unconscious bias and what we can achieve when we work together.
I am proud to be Sikh and part of UK Parliament.
