Lords chamber event 2014: Event partners
The House of Lords worked with a number of organisations to deliver the 2014 Chamber Event.
The English-Speaking Union (ESU)
The ESU, an educational charity was founded in 1918 by the writer and journalist Sir Evelyn Wrench. It is a membership organisation with branches throughout the UK and has a presence in over 50 countries worldwide. The ESU's vision is to provide people in the UK and internationally with communication skills, confidence and networking opportunities. It endeavours to see that the value of good communication as an essential attribute for individual, community and global development and understanding is publicly recognised and widely integrated into education and social policy.
The Tinder Foundation
The Tinder Foundation is a not-for-profit social enterprise that makes good things happen with digital technology. Established in December 2011 as a staff-owned mutual, its 30-strong team supports a network of 5,000 local community partners and works with hundreds of national organisations. It supports thousands of community partners to be smarter in how they use digital technology through its Community How to website, and through management of the UK online centres network and the Learn My Way online learning platform. They've helped more than one million people gain the skills they need to use computers and the internet confidently.
U3A
U3A stands for the University of the Third Age, a self-help learning organisation which provides opportunities for people who are retired or semi-retired, to come together and share with each other their knowledge, experience and skills in interest groups. Between them U3As offer in excess of 300 different subjects in such diverse fields as art, languages, music, history, science, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography and walking. It is all voluntary – the teachers learn and the learners teach. The organisation is nationwide with over 900 U3As and 340,000 members. A typical U3A has about 250 members but could be as small as 12 and as large as 3,000.
UK Youth
UK Youth is a leading national charity that reaches 693,000 young people every year through the largest network of youth clubs and projects. For over 100 years UK Youth has been enabling young people to learn and succeed. It supports young people through a range of innovative programmes to gain life-skills that build confidence, resilience and make them more employable. With almost a million under 25s unemployed today, the work it does has never been more important. What UK Youth does enables young people to develop the tools they need for life, work and a better future.
