The Lord Speaker
The Lord Speaker chairs daily business in the House of Lords chamber from his seat on the Woolsack. He also acts as an ambassador for the Lords and chairs the Commission which provides high-level strategic and political direction for the Lords Administration.
The post of Lord Speaker was established in 2006. Lord McFall of Alcluith was elected by Lords members in 2021 to a five-year term as the fourth Lord Speaker.
The Lord Speaker presides over work in the Lords chamber and acts as an ambassador for the House.

The Lord Speaker’s Lecture series has run since 2010, providing members of the House of Lords and external experts with a forum to deliver lectures and answer questions on their specialist subjects or topics of interest.
In his official role as Lord Speaker, Lord McFall attends many events as a representative of the House of Lords.
The Lord Speaker, Lord McFall of Alcluith, presides over the House of Lords as well as chairing the House of Lords Commission and acting as an ambassador for the Upper House of the UK Parliament.
In his role as an ambassador for the House of Lords, the Lord Speaker makes occasional appearances in the media.
