The Lord Speaker's travel, gift and official entertainment registers

The Lord Speaker's policy is to proactively publish transparency data covering many aspects of his role.

Gifts

The Lord Speaker meets many international visitors, including speakers and other members of overseas Parliaments, prime ministers and heads of state.

During these meetings, modest gifts are sometimes exchanged. Most gifts are donated to the House of Lords. For any gifts which the Lord Speaker wishes to keep and which have an estimated value greater than £300, a formal valuation is obtained and the Lord Speaker must pay the difference greater than £300. The gifts register records all gifts received by the Lord Speaker in his role, regardless of their value.

Non-regular travel

The Lord Speaker is an ambassador for the House of Lords and a core element of his role is to explain and promote the work of the House, and to represent it at high-profile state events and inter-Parliamentary conferences.

Regular inter-parliamentary conferences and meetings to which the Lord Speaker is invited include the G20 Speaker’s Conference, the Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers Conference, the European Speakers Conference (Council of Europe), the EU Speakers Conference (at which the UK has observer status) and the Speakers of the Isles meeting.

Costs relating to non-regular travel including bilateral visits to other Parliaments, for example, are usually met by the Lord Speaker’s Office.

Hosting

The Lord Speaker's Office holds a budget for hosting overseas representatives and holding events on behalf of members and officials of the House of Lords. Details of expenditure on this budget are published here.
