House of Lords Select Committee to look at intergenerational fairness
On Tuesday 4 December, the House of Lords Select Committee on Public Service and Demographic Change will be questioning witnesses on how the employment market might be made more accessible for older people.
In the first session, at 9:45am, the Committee will question:
- Dr Craig Berry, Pensions Policy Officer, Trades Union Congress (TUC);
- Professor John Philpott, economist and labour market analyst, former director of the Employment Policy Institute and former Chief Economic Adviser at the Chartered Institute for Personnel Development (CIPD);
- Caroline Walters OBE, Director of People and Policy, BT; and
- Dianah Worman OBE, Policy Adviser on Diversity and Inclusion, CIPD.
The Committee will explore with these witnesses the changes that employers and labour markets need to make in order to adapt to the ageing population.
In the second session, starting at 11am, the Committee will hear from:
- Professor Sara Arber, Professor of Sociology and Co-Director of the Centre for Research on Ageing and Gender (CRAG), Surrey University;
- Professor Peter Goldblatt, Deputy Director of the Institute of Health Equity, University College London;
- Andrew Harrop, General Secretary, Fabian Society; and
- Professor John Hills, Professor of Social Policy and Director of the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion (CASE) at the London School of Economics.
The Committee plans to question the witnesses on how the ageing of the UK population might affect inequalities between older people based on health, income, gender and geography. The Committee will also ask whether the younger generation really stands to contribute more, and receive less from public spending, than their parents and grandparents.
The evidence session take place from 9.45.am on Tuesday 4 December in Committee Room 2A of the House of Lords and will be webcast live at www.parliamentlive.tv.
