Lords Committee to question Oliver Letwin about Government consultation principles
The House of Lords Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee will tomorrow take evidence from Oliver Letwin MP, Minister for Government Policy, as part of their inquiry into the new “Consultation Principles” announced by the Government in July.
The Committee will ask Mr Letwin why the Government has chosen to replace the 2008 Code of Practice on consultation with the new ”Consultation Principles” and what difference he expects to see in the outcomes.
The Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee issued a call for evidence on 30 October which has produced some excellent contributions and the Committee will draw on these in their questions. These are likely to include some of the following topics:
- Duration of consultation processes
- “Proportionate and realistic” timeframes
- “Transparency and feedback”
- Involvement of hard-to-reach groups
- “Digital by Default”
- Improving consultation and policy-making
- When is consultation “Disproportionate”?
- Monitoring of practice across Government
The evidence session will take place on Tuesday 11 December at 3.45pm in Committee Room 3A of the House of Lords and will be webcast live at www.parliamentlive.tv.
The evidence session is also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
