Peers probe industry giants on higher education in science subjects
Representatives from big science graduate and post graduate employers will be quizzed by the Lords Science and Technology Committee on Tuesday 28 February as part of an inquiry into the state of higher education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects. The Committee will then speak to representatives from smaller employers.
At 10.40am, the Committee will hear from:
- Colin Smith, Director of Engineering and Technology at Rolls-Royce;
- Dr Malcolm Skingle, Director of Academic Liaison at GlaxoSmithKline;
- Stephen Uden, Head of Skills & Economic Affairs at Microsoft Ltd.; and
- Dr Paul Beasley, Head of Strategic Development at Siemens.
Immediately following, at 11.30am, the Committee will hear from:
- Dr Julian Braybrook, Head of Strategy, Measurement Research at LGC;
- Professor Chris Wise, Founder of Expedition Engineering; and
- Steven White, Director of Human Resources at Vectura.
The Committee will question the witnesses on issues such as an apparent shortage of STEM graduates in the UK; their expectations of graduates' skills; their relationship with UK universities; and the reported difficulties in recruiting overseas graduates due to visa restrictions.
The evidence session will take place from 10.40am on Tuesday 28 February in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords.
