Lords to quiz Ken Clarke on EU law

Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke QC MP will face questions on EU criminal procedure policy from the House of Lords EU Justice and Institutions Sub-Committee on Wednesday as part of its current inquiry

The Committee will ask the Justice Secretary about the UK's take on the European Commission's proposals to develop the EU's system of criminal procedural law. It is expected to cover subjects such as cross-border crime, judicial and police cooperation, and whether national courts should have more freedom to consider fundamental rights issues when adjudicating on issues of mutual recognition.

Questions will also be asked about how wide the EU's role in legislating for criminal procedure should be and how the UK might use its reputation in this area to improve criminal procedure in other Member States.

The evidence session will take place at 3.40pm, Wednesday 18 January in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords, and can be watched live at www.parliamentlive.tv.
