How green is this Government?
Peers with a range of backgrounds in environmental protection and sustainability including a former Secretary of State for the Environment and leaders of several environmental organisations, will debate the Government's green agenda on Thursday 12 January.
Baroness Smith of Basildon (Labour), who tabled and will open the debate, said:
“I hope that through this debate, we will see just how well the Government measure up to their assertion that they will be the ‘greenest Government ever'. It's a sort of benchmarking exercise so we can hear how they are doing with the Green Deal, the Green Investment Bank and green policy generally.
“I look forward to hearing the Government respond in a candid and open way to the debate, letting us know how they would rate their green performance so far and any plans they may have to address any areas that have not progressed as well as they had expected.”
Other Members expected to speak include:
- Lord Prescott (Labour), former Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for the Environment;
- Lord Greaves (Liberal Democrat), former Party Spokesperson for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs;
- Baroness Worthington (Labour), policy consultant for climate change and energy policy;
- Lord Hunt of Chesterton (Labour), former President of the National Society of Clean Air, current President of the Advisory Committee on Protection of the Sea and Vice President of Environmental Protection UK;
- Baroness Miller of Chilthorne Domer (Liberal Democrat), Vice President for the Council for National Parks, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers and Wildlife Link;
- Lord Teverson (Liberal Democrat), Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Party Committee on Energy and Climate Change; and
- Lord Turnbull (Crossbench), former Permanent Secretary to the Department for the Environment and Trustee of the Global Warming Policy Foundation.
Lord Grantchester (Labour), Lord Judd (Labour) and Viscount Hanworth (Labour) are also expected to take part in the debate.
Lord Marland (Conservative) will respond on behalf of the government.
The debate is open to media and the public. Please allow time for security screening.
The debate will also be broadcast live on Parliament TV.
