Peers hear from British Sugar
The House of Lords Agriculture, Fisheries, Environment and Energy EU Sub-Committee will quiz representatives from British Sugar Plc, the National Farmers Union (NFU) and developing countries as part of their short follow-up inquiry into the EU Sugar Regime.
The Committee will first hear from Barry Newton, a representative of 47 developing countries with an interest in sugar.
Mr Newton will be followed, at 11am, by William Martin, Chairman NFU Sugar Board and Gail Soutar, Senior CAP and International Affairs Adviser for the National Farmers Union.
Finally, at 11.30am, the Committee will question Chris Carter, Corporate Affairs Director, and Clare Wenner, Political Adviser at British Sugar Plc.
The witnesses are likely to face questions on issues including:
- the impact of the 2006 sugar reform, both in the EU and in the developing world;
- what lessons can be drawn for the current reform;
- how well the EU's sugar policy is aligned with its trade and development policies; and
- any areas of contention between British Sugar Plc and the NFU
The evidence session will take place on Wednesday 20 June at 10am in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords and will be webcast live at www.parliamentlive.tv.
The evidence session is also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
