Would Wales be affected by an independent Scotland?
Gerald Holtham, Chair of the Independent Commission on Funding and Finance for Wales, will face questions from the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee on Tuesday as part of its inquiry into the potential economic impact of Scottish independence.
The Committee will ask Professor Holtham about how Scottish independence might affect Wales and the rest of the UK. The economic links between Wales and Scotland will be explored, and other issues that will be discussed include foreign investments in Scotland and how assets and liabilities might be divided between an independent Scotland and the rest of the UK.
Specifically, the Committee will ask:
- Would Scottish independence affect the underlying growth rate of its economy and that of the rest of the UK?
- Would it be feasible for Scotland to have a separate immigration policy to the UK? Could Wales benefit from setting its own immigration policy?
- Would Scotland's currency choice affect the Welsh economy?
- Would Scottish independence create an agenda for more devolved powers in Wales and Northern Ireland?
