Lords hear from United Nations migration expert

The UN's Special Representative for Migration, Peter Sutherland, will be questioned by the Lords Home Affairs, Health and Education EU Sub-Committee  in the first evidence session of their inquiry into the EU's Global Approach to Migration and Mobility (GAMM).

Mr Sutherland, also Chairman of both Goldman Sachs International and the London School of Economics, was appointed by the then United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan, as his Special Representative for Migration in 2006.  As part of this role, Mr Sutherland was responsible for establishing a Global Forum on Migration and Development, a group designed to help Member State governments better understand how migration could benefit their country's development goals.

The Committee are likely to quiz Mr Sutherland on issues including:

  • his views on the EU's GAMM;
  • how the EU can marry immigration control objectives with development aims;
  • whether it is possible for EU Member States to speak with ‘one voice' on the issue of migration; and
  • how the EU can work with other international organisations, like the UN, on migration and mobility issues.

The evidence session will take place on Wednesday 20 June at 11.30am in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords and will be webcast live at www.parliamentlive.tv.

The evidence session is also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
