Lords select committee to question experts on housing for older people
The House of Lords Committee on Public Service and Demographic Change will next week hear evidence from experts about housing services for the elderly. The Committee will question the National Housing Federation, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, a Welsh housing charity and a private sector developer in order to find out about how to meet the housing needs of an ageing population.
The Committee plans to ask witnesses about:
- barriers to increasing the supply of specialist housing, including the willingness of the private sector to build retirement housing;
- how the state could encourage and support older people to continue to live in their own homes, including the part played by housing modifications; and
- the role that equity release schemes could play in funding care for older home owners.
The evidence session will start at 9.45am on Tuesday 30 October in Committee Room 2A of the House of Lords.

- Gary Day – Executive Director for Land & Planning, McCarthy & Stone;
- Jake Eliot – Policy Leader for care and support, National Housing Federation;
- Dr Ilona Haslewood – Programme Manager in the Ageing Society Team, Joseph Rowntree Foundation; and
- Chris Jones – Director, Care and Repair Cymru.
