Lord to quiz defence expert on potential impact of Scottish independence

The House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee will tomorrow take evidence from Francis Tusa, Editor of Defence Analysis, on the impact on defence provision and expenditure in the UK in the event of Scottish independence.

The Committee will ask Mr Tusa to expand on his views that in the event of Scottish independence Trident could easily be transferred elsewhere in the UK and for an assessment of what such relocation would cost. He will also be asked about the possible impact on the Scottish economy of Trident's removal.

Other areas the Committee will cover in the session include the prospects for Scottish non-nuclear defence provision in the event of independence and what the prospects will be for cooperation on defence matters between an independent Scotland and the rest of the UK.

The evidence session will take place at 3:35pm on Tuesday 30 October in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
