Lords focus on asylum and migration plans for future EU Justice and Home Affairs programme
As part of its ongoing inquiry into the shape of the EU's next five-year agenda for EU justice and home affairs (JHA) activity, the House of Lords Home Affairs, Health and Education EU Sub-Committee will question three experts on asylum and migration, on Wednesday 11 December.
At 11.30am, the Committee will speak to:
- Dr Philippe De Bruycker, Deputy Director of the Migration Policy Centre, European University Institute, and former adviser at the European Commission in the Home Affairs Directorate General, in charge of drafting proposals for directives on immigration; and
- Elizabeth Collett, Director of the Migration Policy Institute Europe (MPI), and Senior Advisor to MPI's Transatlantic Council on Migration; and
- Professor Michael Keith, Director, ESRC Centre on Migration, Policy and Society, University of Oxford.
The witnesses are likely to face questions including:
- What should be the strategic priorities in the next JHA programme for migration and asylum?
- Did all of the priorities in relation to asylum and migration set out in the Stockholm programme lead to action, or are there any outstanding gaps?
- Should cooperation with third countries form part of the migration priorities of the future programme?
- Is there adequate monitoring and data collection in relation to asylum and migration issues in Europe?
- Should there be further EU action to tackle human trafficking?
The evidence session will take place on Wednesday 11 December at 11.30am in Committee Room 2.
