What is the role for National Parliaments in EU decision making- Lords to quiz Dr Richard Corbett

The House of Lords EU Committee will tomorrow take evidence from Dr Richard Corbett, a former MEP and member of President Herman Van Rompuy's European Council Cabinet. The session is part of the Committee's inquiry into the role of national parliaments in the EU.

The Committee will question Dr Corbett on a number of issues including:

  • Do the views of national parliaments feature significantly in the discussions between heads of state in the EU either in formal meetings or informally behind the scenes?
  • Are Ministers in the Council of Ministers aware of the views of national parliaments other than their own?
  • What should be the relationship between national parliaments and the European parliament?
  • In addition to the yellow card procedure, which allows national parliaments to voice subsidiarity concerns with legislative proposals, should national parliaments have a right to propose a new policy?
  • What can national parliaments do to influence EU policy and legislation at an earlier stage through pre-legislative scrutiny?

The evidence session will start at 4:10pm on Tuesday 3 December in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords.

The session will be webcast at www.parliamentlive.tv and is also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
