McDonald's and Barclays appear before Lords Committee investigating youth unemployment
McDonald's, Crossrail, and Barclays are among the witnesses at the evidence session next Monday, 9 December, of the Lords' investigation into soaring youth joblessness across Europe.
The House of Lords EU Sub Committee on the Internal Market, Infrastructure and Employment, is carrying out an inquiry into EU proposals to get more young people into work, and next week large employers and an organisation which represents them will give evidence.
The Committee will ask witnesses if employers should bear any responsibility for getting people into work, and whether they are consulted on policies that aim to tackle unemployment.
In the first of two sessions, starting at 4.15pm, the Committee will hear from Terry Morgan CBE, Chairman, Crossrail, Jez Langhorn, Vice President, People, McDonald's, and Tanith Dodge, Director of HR, Marks and Spencer.
In the second of the sessions, starting at around 5.15pm, Mike Thompson, Head of Employability and Early Career Programmes, Barclays, Dr Peter Kyle, CEO, WORKing for YOUth, and Adam Swash, Head of Strategy & Research, Experian, will give evidence.
Other questions the Committee will ask include:
- How has your recruitment of young people changed during the course of the current economic downturn?
- What do you think is the impact of labour migration into the UK on the likelihood of unemployed young British people finding work?
- Do you think employers should do more to bridge the skills and employability gaps?
- Should there be more promotion of apprenticeships and work experience?
- Is the plethora of different schemes and programmes for young people making the situation more difficult for employers?
The first evidence session will start at 4.15pm on Monday 9 December in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords.
