Peers question Australian Convergence Review and UK thinktank experts on media convergence
On Tuesday 22 January, in the latest evidence session of their inquiry into media convergence, the Lords Communications Committee will question an expert on media convergence from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) thinktank, and a representative from the Australian Convergence Review.
At 3.30pm, the Committee will hear from Nigel Warner, Associate Fellow, IPPR.
Mr Warner is the author of a recent report published by IPPR, ‘Life after Leveson: The challenge to strengthen Britain's diverse and vibrant media'. The report argues that adjustments to the system of press regulation must be seen in the context of wider changes occurring in the media as digital convergence unites text, audio and video content on the same platforms. The Committee will use the evidence session to explore Mr Warner's proposals for a new regulatory settlement across the media.
Following on, at 4.30pm, the Committee will question Louise McElvogue, a member of the Australian Convergence Review committee.
The Convergence Review was an independent review established by the Australian Government to examine the policy and regulatory frameworks that apply to the converged media and communications landscape in Australia. The team handed its final report to the Australian Government on 30 March 2012. The Committee will examine the recommendations of their report and explore lessons the UK might learn from the approaches under consideration in Australia.
The evidence session will take place at 3.30pm on Tuesday 22 January in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords and will be webcast live at www.parliamentlive.tv.
The evidence session is also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
