Lords Constitution Committee to quiz Lord Chief Justice
The House of Lords Constitution Committee will tomorrow take evidence from Lord Judge, the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales. The Committee take evidence from the Lord Chief Justice every year and question him on the state of the law, the judiciary and legal services. This will be the Committee's final evidence from Lord Judge, who is retiring in September.
In this year's session the Committee are likely to ask about changes to the office of Lord Chief Justice over the last decade, government proposals to change the system for seeking judicial review, proposals in the Crime and Courts Bill, including the requirement for the Lord Chief Justice to promote diversity amongst the judiciary and the introduction of cameras in certain courts, and forthcoming changes to legal aid.
The evidence session will take place at 10.30am on Wednesday 30 January in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
The evidence session will be webcast live at www.parliamentlive.tv and is open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
