Chief Scientific Advisor to give evidence to Lords committee on long-term nuclear strategy
The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee is to question Professor David Mackay, Chief Scientific Advisor at the Department of Energy & Climate Change, on the Government's roll-out of its nuclear energy strategy.
On Tuesday 23 July the committee will hold a one-off evidence session to scrutinise what progress the Government has made on its long-term nuclear strategy.
In November 2011 the committee published its report “Nuclear research and development capabilities”, which concluded that the Government was neglecting to lead and coordinate nuclear research and development (R&D) activities.
The Government subsequently issued a response which laid out its commitment to developing a new long-term strategy to 2050 and beyond.
Questions which the witnesses will be asked include:
- Has a permanent nuclear R&D advisory board been created with a long term mission?
- How effectively are Government departments working together?
- How will the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) achieve the status of being an international leader?
- What are the current plans for dealing with nuclear waste?
The evidence session will be held on Tuesday 23 July 2013 at 10.45am in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
