Lords question Immigration Minister about migrant workers' rights across Europe
Mark Harper MP, Minister of State for Immigration, is to appear before a House of Lords committee investigating proposed changes to the rights of EU workers, on Monday 22 July.
The House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on the Internal Market, Infrastructure and Employment is scrutinising a new European Union draft Directive to improve the application of EU workers' rights to free movement.
The committee will question the Home Office Minister on the proposal, asking him what the impact this Directive might have on migrant numbers to and from the UK, and whether the free movement of workers is sustainable in the current economic climate.
The committee will also ask Mr Harper questions such as:
- Is a new Directive necessary to protect EU migrant workers' rights?
- Do you think the proposal risks placing any undue bureaucratic and/or financial burdens on businesses?
- Does free movement of workers within the EU lead to so-called "social benefit tourism"?
The evidence session will take place at 4.15pm on Monday 22 July in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords.
