Lords to hear from Citigroup and Berenberg Bank on GEMU

The House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs will next week take evidence from the Chief Economists at Citgroup and Berenberg Bank as well as a Senior Analyst from Elcano Royal Institute of Madrid as part of their inquiry into EU plans for Genuine Economic and Monetary Union (GEMU).

The Committee will ask the witnesses for their views on which areas of GEMU are most necessary to resolve the problems identified by the euro area crisis and whether the proposals for banking union will decisively break the link between bank and sovereign debt.

The session will also touch on the possible impact of GEMU on individual Member States and especially the UK.

The evidence session will start at 10:20am on Tuesday 18 June in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.

Giving evidence at 10.20am will be:

  • Willem Buiter, Chief Economist, Citigroup; and
  • Holger Schmieding, Chief Economist, Berenberg Bank.

They will be followed at 11:30am by Federico Steinberg, Senior Analyst, Elcano Royal Institute, Madrid.
