Lords quiz practioners and academic on EU plans for justice and home affairs
The House of Lords Home Affairs, Health and Education EU Sub-Committee will begin taking oral evidence for its new inquiry, which is examining the EU's next five-year agenda for EU justice and home affairs (JHA) activity, on Wednesday 27 November
At 11.00 am, the Committee will question:
- Mike Kennedy CBE, former head of Eurojust, former Chief Operating Officer, Crown Prosecution Service and Member, European Criminal Lawyers Association;
- Professor Estella Baker, Professor of Criminal Law and Justice, Leicester De Montfort Law School; and
- Sarah Garvey, Barrister, Allen & Overy LLP and Member of the EU Committee at the Law society of England and Wales.
The witnesses are likely to face questions on issues including whether the future programme should focus on objectives rather than simply being a list of initiatives; if the EU policing and justice agencies – Eurojust and Europol – should be subject to major review as part of the next programme; the current problems in private international law and whether EU legislation could help to sort the problems out; and if there are areas of crime which require further measures outlining offences and sanctions.
The evidence session will take place on Wednesday 27 November at 11.00 am in Committee Room 3.
