How does sport promote Britain overseas? Lords to quiz Premier League and England and Wales Cricket Board
The House of Lords Committee on Soft Power and the UK's Influence will next week take evidence from Richard Scudamore, Chief Executive of the Premier League, David Collier, Chief Executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Lord Moynihan, former Chairman of the British Olympic Association
The evidence session will look at the role sport can play in promoting British values and culture abroad. The Committee will discuss the economic contribution of the export of British sport as well as how Britain's position as the birthplace of many of the most popular sports around the world impacts on how we are seen in other countries.
Questions to Mr Scudamore are expected to consider the influence of foreign owners and players on the Premier League and whether the League can still be described as a British institution. Members are expected to ask Lord Moynihan about the success of London 2012 in promoting the UK overseas and what other events, such as the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2015 Rugby Union World Cup, can learn from the Olympics. The Committee is expected to discuss with Mr Collier the role of cricket in contributing to the UK's soft power and the promotion of human rights.
The evidence session will start at 4.10 pm on Tuesday 19 November in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
