Lords Committee to question experts on the commercial potential of waste
The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will next Tuesday, 26 November, hear from two senior academics on how the UK can transform waste into commercially viable products
It will also question the head of science and technology at TMO Renewables, a company which exploits the potential of organic waste to produce marketable products such as ethanol, polymers and bioplastics.
The committee is exploring the potential to create a multi-million pound economy from waste, using by-products from agriculture, industry and households.
Next week's evidence session will hear from Mr Ian Tebble, Head of Science and Technology at TMO Renewables; Professor James Clark, Professor of Chemistry and Director of the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence at the University of York; and Professor Nilay Shah, Professor of Process Systems Engineering at Imperial College London.
The session starts at 10.40 am and questions the Committee will ask include:
- Which technologies are the most promising for turning waste into valuable products?
- What are the economics of using waste rather than buying in raw materials?
- Which products are currently on the market and which will reach the market in the near future?
- What can be done to speed up the conveyer belt to commercialisation?
- How do Government policies influence the market for these products?
The evidence sessions will take place on Tuesday 26 November, starting at 10.40 am in Committee Room 4.
