Tackling youth unemployment in the EU: Lords ask 'Are the young being heard?'
Representatives from Birmingham City Council, the UK's largest local authority, and from the Greater London Authority, will give evidence to the House of Lords Committee investigating levels of joblessness across Europe
On Monday 11 November the House of Lords EU Sub Committee on the Internal Market, Infrastructure and Employment will hear from Shilpi Akbar, Assistant Director for Employment, and Lloyd Broad, Head of European and International Affairs, from Birmingham City Council, and Alex Conway, European Programmes Director at the Greater London Authority.
The witnesses will be quizzed on whether or not young people themselves are being given enough of a say on how to tackle the problem of youth unemployment.
They will also be asked a variety of other questions, including:
- What does the picture look like locally?
- Is the problem a mismatch of skills or simply a lack of job opportunities?
- How well can actions at local level complement national programmes?
- Do European funds add value?
- Are there too many programmes and schemes in this area?
