Leading academics quizzed by Lords on the role of national parliaments in the EU
Next Tuesday 22 October the House of Lords EU Select Committee is inviting three senior academics to assist in their investigation into the role of national parliaments in the European Union
The Committee's inquiry is exploring the role of national parliaments in shaping and influencing EU decision making, with an element of the inquiry exploring the effectiveness of new powers under the Lisbon Treaty of 2007 (effective from December 2009).
Professor Adam Cygan from the University of Leicester, Professor Simon Hix from the London School of Economics, and Dr Julie Smith from the University of Cambridge will give evidence.
The witnesses will give evidence on Tuesday 22 October at 3.40 pm in House of Lords Committee Room 4.
Other questions that the witnesses are likely to face are:
- How has the role of national parliaments in the EU framework developed in recent years, particularly since the adoption of the Treaty of Lisbon?
- How effective are national parliaments – individually and collectively – at shaping and influencing decision-making at an EU-level?
- What impact has the early warning mechanism had on the influence of national parliaments?
- Could co-operation between national parliaments be further improved and, if so, how?
