Tackling Europe's youth unemployment problem - Lords to publish report

The House of Lords EU Committee will publish its report into EU plans to tackle youth unemployment on Thursday 10 April.

In recent years youth unemployment across Europe has reached record levels.

The European Union has pledged to spend eight billion euros between 2014 and 2020 on tackling youth joblessness, and EU leaders have agreed to spend the first six billion over a two year period starting in 2014.

Over the last eight months the House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on the Internal Market, Infrastructure and Employment has been scrutinising the EU plans, asking if the money is likely to be spent wisely.

The Committee has heard from Government Ministers, MEPs, the European Commissioner for employment, large employers, unions, academics, local authorities, civil society organisations involved in helping young people, careers guidance organisations as well as hearing directly from young people in Liverpool and Birmingham.

Embargoed copies of the report will be available to the media from the Lords Press Office on Wednesday 9 April, embargoed until 00:01 Thursday 10 April.

To request a copy, or to request an interview with the Chairman, Baroness O'Cathain, please email lordspressoffice@parliament.uk or call 020 7219 8550.
